Whats in a name? also as Names I wouldn't want to be found dead with

If you've read my prev post, you'd know i spoke at some length about a certain Leacock Stephen. I just wikied him and found that he was a canadian(not to be confused with kanadian) comedian; so i think he'll probably appreciate what i am going say about him now.

Now those who have been reading my blog regularly(which would b in the last two days) or in fact anyone i have spoken to recently will know that i have been bored to death these hols; others know now. I'll make that my excuse for the worthless crap that i am going to write now.
I was thinking about people's names(Mr.Leacock being responsible for this(ashwin, you were right; his name was stephen leacock and not that other thing(and no nishanth, i wont stop bracketing just coz u want me to))) and how wierd some of them are. Take Mr. Leacock, for instance. Suppose he's going give a press conf or something and instead of him Bruce Lee turns up. The reporter mistakes him for the peacock oops..leacock(not likely given their er..quite different(to say the least) ancestries..but lets just assume(for the sake of argument) a near blind reporter(like kaushik when he's driving..only he can mistake a chinky for a canadian)) As i was saying supposing this reporter(i am tired of saying reporter, so shall we say kaushik instead..is more convenient..adds more spice to the discussion too), this kaushik says "Hi Mr. Leacock", and Bruce Lee who(understandably) interprets it as leecock says "Whats that again?"(in a menacing tone(u'll know wat i mean if u have seen any of his movies(ofcourse in english..not the dubbed versions on vijay tv))) and kaushik, knowing somethings wrong and but not what(he's kaushik..you cant expect too much of him) says.."err..Mr Leacock?". What follows is all a blur with sounds like a cat fight(no references to pussy paddyman here..that part is reserved for later) and then the cow is a mishapen bulk on the floor(remember, bruce knows kung-fu..among other martial arts). Now, you can appreciate what its like to have a name like leacock and what unimaginable consequences it might provoke(cow's death for one..god(or gosh..whichever your prefer) bless stephen's ancestors..for picking up such a nice surname). Its also not so hard to see why the guy turned out to be a successful(so says wiki..personally i've never heard of him) comedian..i mean with a name like his, it'd be harder not to make people laugh(atleast while introducing oneself).
Speaking of funny names, i came to know last sem that eminem's real name is Marshall Mathers..thank goodness he didn't perform in north india.(dont get it? mathers you maaather..(still dont get it? then you never will)). I guess every country has its fair share of hopelessly funny names, but India has more than a fair share..its simply LOADED with names that seemed to have been aimed to sound hilarious. There are a couple sardars(mandae malle kundae, i mean) i know with names sukhdeep and hardick...seriously! i swear it. There's another guy in my coll..right here from tn..called puviventhan. Now if this guy lived in chnai, his name would merely have been funny; but in surathkal, among the hundreds of shettys and bhats(thats another one!), imagine going around with a name like puviventhan..hilarious, eh? One of my profs, after asking us all to introduce ourselves, finding us laughing(pardonably, coz he was laughing too) at puvi, asked him, to make him feel better, what his name meant. The reply, 'king of earth'. Now know what the king of earth is called at coll? ding dong bell,(puvi in the well). I am sure he must be cursing his parents.
If you've seen as many tamil movies as i have, you'd know this part where the hero/heroine asks the herione/hero what his/her name is and replies invariably, "nice name". Now imagine if puvi is cast in a movie(or for that matter paddyman..except that no producer in his right mind would even consider playing rushi in a movie in even a comedy role) and the heroine(cant think of anyone appropriate for puvi..or, in paddy's case, cant pick a single one) asks him for his name and he replies "puvi(or pussy paddyman, respectively)" and she says, "nice name"..imagine how puvi/rushi would feel..i think the next scene would b the movie climax..or rather, an anticlimax.
No post about wierd names would be complete without a reference to the mad names celebrities come up with nowadays for their kids. What with Sahara and Maddox Pitt-Jolie, Jigme Gere and Kafka Jones...and ofcourse Rushi Padhuman, a good-old ordinary Stephen Leacock comes as a refreshing change.

cant think of anything appropriate now...unless this'll do....on being bored (not) among other things?

I've moved on...

Lightning bloody well strikes the same place twice

Its 3 in the afternoon, blazing hot outside(40 deg C) and I am stuck in front of my laptop reading random blogs and trapping all unfortunate ppl who are online into chatting with me.
Welcome to what promises to be my schedule for everyday the next 2.5 months.
I feel kinda wierd in my legs...rather i dont feel anything at all in them. But what else can i expect but numb feet if i have been sitting like this ever since i got up(a good 5 hrs ago).
(Not) talking of other things, what do you think engg students in chnai have in common at this time of the year every year?(apart from them being engg. students and having sumthing in common, that is) No prizes for correct guesses. Since I am bored to death(i hope i have made myself clear on that) and i remebered to take my laptop along when i got buried(yes i am christian), here i am blogging you ppl from my coffin.
India was playing Bangladesh today..i noticed today morn that the BCCI has some more astuteness and foresight more than we give them credit for. They signed up for this series in bangla even before the WC strongly suggesting that they knew that the trip to windies would result in a debacle and wanted the team to come "back to form" and hence a visit to the minnows. What they didn't expect was that we'd struggle against even bangladesh..god only knows how the public would react if they screw up this series..the least we can expect is that the BCCI will be a closed and forgotten chapter in Indian cric history. But that wasn't why i brought this up; the reason was that i was flipping through the tv channels and..lo behold, the match was being played on raj tv?! complete with live tamil commentary. I watched it for some hour(man, cricket has never been greater fun! :) ) just for the commentary..it was hilarious! I dont think the commentator knew more about cricket than me(and that translates as almost not a single thing) but they had picked him for his extensive tamil vocab(or creativity- he kept on coming up with words i didnt even know existed). What he didnt know in terms of cricket, he compensated with philosophical interjections and poetic comparisions(he was comparing gambhir's backlift(i think) with the wing-flappings of some wierd and either extinct or as yet undiscovered bird-do i need to say anymore?). On the whole he was like a cross between vairamuthu and vadivel and the raj enterprises have hit upon the perfect formula to make cric entertaining(that is if you aren't sadistic by nature and are entertained by the sight of india losing effortlessly-india struggling to win in succession). Keep up the good work, ppl!
Btw, i went to sathyam on thursday evening..after a lot of delibrations, to that blind date thingy that they play there once a week.(If you havent ben in chnai for the last year, you probably dont know that some jobless dumbass(sounds like someone i know) came up with this concept of playing a movie with no one in the audience knowing what it'll be until they actually see it. A lot of the cinema-goers, however, failed to appreciate his creative genius in naming this the 'blind date' and bought tickets expecting to see a romance flick..resulting in some ugly scenes) Now i say delibrations(you'd have probably forgotten..so scroll back some 4-5 lines up) because when i went for this show last december with some friends, they played a hindi movie(omg) called I C U(omg squared!) (i am skipping the inevitable movie review coz if i start i dont think i'll finish this post..so when i say i hav strong feelings about this show, just accept me at face value and dont argue). Now these friends of mine said they generally dont play hindi movies, that lightning never strikes the same place twice and all such balderdash..and the result- me sitting there in studio 5 at 7 pm on thursday olivious of the horror in store for me. The usual ads(ther was a new one this time; some nathella thingy..remind me to tell you about it), the credits and then:"LIFE IN A METRO"(ok..not so bad)..starring Shilpa Shetty and Dharmendra..and i burst into tears(of anger). The manager(or whatever he's supposed to be) was watching, i guess, because he hurried in and asked the proj guy to stop and announced that since it was yr since they started playing this show at sathyam, all of us would get free popcorn and coke for enduring the movie. Slightly mollified i managed to get the better of my emotions. I'll spare you a complete recital of my misery and suferings for the next 3 hrs(it was bollywood movie..what else would you expect). Srinivas who's watched more hindi movies than i(about a 117 more) told me that it was decent by bollywood standards. I just hope that i am not made to watch anything that is bad by bolywoood standards..the mere thought gives me the shivers(in summer in chnai..so thats saying something).
If i ever get to lay my hands on the fellow who said lightning never strikes the same place twice...

No promises

So...we meet again.
No..this is not a dialogue from a 1970s hollywood flick. Its just that i am back in chennai for the summer vacations and am already bored to death and dont feel like doing anything, but dont feel like blogging lesser than i dont feel like doing anything else. Hence this post.

Which brings us back to So...we meet again.
I haven't posted since last may. That makes this the first anniversary of non posting days(give or take a month). The reasons are several: nitk, nitk and hmmm..nitk, to name a few. I wont bother you with the details. It seems one year is too long a time to stay away from blogs...when i tried to revive my account, i found that blogspot has (mercifully?) deleted my older blog and so i have to start afresh now.

Which brings us back to So...we meet again.
You might not know what kept me from blogging these past few months..on the other hand you might know, if i have already told you(probable) and you generally listen when i tell you stuff(sigh..not so probable). Anyway you'll know now because i'm going to tell you(i know i said i wont bother you with details..but i have changed my mind). If nitk ever decides to advertise(highly unlikely in this century..or, come to think of it, this millenium) and they tell you that they have the best intra coll lan in india, go right ahead and ask them who they think they are trying to kid(and hope that they dont take your q too literally and reply,'you'..some guys in my coll are actually capable of exactly that). I was more naive 6 months back than i am now and i believed them and took my laptop to coll hoping to catch up on some lost blogging(among other things). The rest, as they say, is history.
It seems the internet access speed improves for second years but even if the rate of improvement is like the richter scale(thats logarithmic for you ignorant morons), it will make no big difference; I might manage to get one post posted in about 72.43 hrs. So dont brighten up with joy when you see that i am back now..i might do my disappearing act after 2 months. So, no promises..

Which brings us back to So...we meet again.
The main requisit of an ideal blogger is utter boredom and since i find myself in satisfaction of that indispensable requirement , i am eligible for further advancement(dont worry, i haven't swallowed a thesaurus..its just that i have a lecturer who always talks like that and some of it has rubbed off on me).Since i am entirely jobless i guess i might actually end up posting a bit more regularly. But I find myself having to put in one full years worth of blogworthy crap into two months' worth of blogs...and i was never any good at precise writing.
