Why Set Max is the best channel ever

I just got back home yesterday for my summer vacations and since this is the time every year when I always (try to) revive my long inactive blog, here I go again.

This semester was the longest ever spanning an incredible five months, thanks to our crazy new director who just had to do something wierd to get noticed. An insecure kinda fellow..he keeps doing something eccentric once in a while to get himself in the limelight. I guess he's one of that lot who believe there is no such thing as bad publicity. A week before the exams when all of us were looking forward to the end of this seemingly never ending sem, he makes an announcement that the mandatory attendance will be increased to 85% from the next sem. This was just when we (the non nerds) were deciding whether it was worth it to even try to prepare for the exams and he comes up with this kind of a statement. I mean, here we are in bad need of some encouragement and the least he could do is keep that big fat mouth of his shut. Instead he decides to cheer us all up with this very exciting piece of news. Maybe he believes, somewhere in that hopelessly confused and screwed up head of his, that such news might 'motivate' us or something. If he does, I am afraid I cant put my sentiments into any words that would do them justice.

Enough cribbing about coll I guess. Why waste time discussing such dismal topics when there are much more entertaining subjects ripe for analysis? Like the movie that I (accidently) ended up watched on Set Max yesterday.

As I said earlier I had got home only yesterday evening and on discovering that there was an IPL match at 7 I decided to check it out. Because I hadn't followed any of the previous matches and wanted to see what the tournament was like. And also because I was colossally bored (hardly half a day into my hols). And I guess I switched on the TV a bit early because guess what, there was a hindi movie running on that channel. Now anyone even faintly acquainted with me knows of my passion for hindi movies (that doesn't quite mean what it seems to mean). But even after taking into account my prejudice, this movie was a stinker. In the first place, it was called "Good boy, Bad boy"(!!!!) and it also had Emraan Hashmi in it. Do I need to say any more? Actually I do because it was a lot worse than you can imagine even after those two very enlightening pieces of information. Thankfully the movie was in the climax scene when I tuned into the channel. I'll describe the scene briefly. There was some inter college quiz competition going on and our man Emraan was predictably losing. There was one more round to go and he needed around infinite points to win. No guesses for who won; the novelty was how he won. The round had some ten questions and it was a buzzer round. I actually tried to make a list of the inconsistancies in that scene. This is what the list looke like:

Inconsistent Fact Number 1: Emraan Hashmi was on a quiz show and not smooching some girl which is all that I guess he knows (or does he now?) to do.

Inconsistent Fact Number 2: After hitting the buzzer every candidate gets 30 seconds (on their timer) to think and answer the question. Clearly the director hasn't watched even BQC.

Inconsistent Fact Number 3: I said 30 seconds on their buzzer because after 10 seconds the buzzer counts once in every two seconds and after 20 seconds it counts once in every five seconds.

Inconsistent Fact Number 4: Given the above two points it would be fairly normal to expect all contestants to go for every answer. However that is where you err; this is bollywood, dude. Fairly normal doesn't apply here. So only Emraan goes for every question and voila!, he gets them all right. As a matter of fact, there is one question about the national anthem when he gets up to answer rebuking the quiz master for not doing the same. (that wierd noise BK makes to show disgust and disbelief would sum up my emotions at this point).

There is of course a tie breaker in the end and this is the best part of them all. The question is: "Albert Einstein kis year mae Third Law of Motion discover kiya tha?" (pardon my hindi grammar. Its next to non existent, much like my coll director's common sense) And thats not all. The options were "A) 1840 B)1850 C)1860 D) 1870". Our man takes all of his 30 seconds(real time:10+20+50=80 seconds) during which an entire recap of the whole movie was shown as a pseudo flashback sequence. This time I really dont need to say anymore. I mean, I agree that there are tamil movies especially those with 'Captain' in them where you can find a fight scene with more inconsistencies than this but this was incredibly more hilarious. I have to watch more of Set Max. Thats going to be my first resolution for this vacation. The second is the usual 'I wont let the blog die' resolution. Lets see how successful thats going to be this time.

Good theory. Your reasoning is sound. You write quite well. However, there seems to be a sort of vacuity (as vacuous as the Hindi movie you've gone on to review oh so well), which takes away the pace of the piece. In other words, there's nothing fresh.

I would've liked something (just for example, because I'm quite sure not many will like my theory) of the sort:

Set Max is the best channel ever, because Spooner might have pronounced it as Sex Mat.

No, but more seriously, you're good with the tools of the trade. You can write exactly what you want to. And you know you can write something that is more meaningful to you that a rant is, especially a rant for the sake of ranting. Write, for example, about something that has drifted you off your trajectory. Something that has had an effect on you.

This (the one paragraph above) is not something you should take seriously unless you strongly associate yourself to it. I'm not a big believer in writing, or reading, myself, but these things remain some of the few things I look forward to getting back to, repeatedly. Hope you'll find the experience I'm talking about with words, too.

Oh, and I'm sorry about the advice. Just that I *had* to comment (after your announcement at your room, regarding the reincarnation of your blog).

Hilarious! Especially the BK's disgust summing up, enhanced by the fact that someone has tried to advertise on your comments bar, if I am not mistaken.

85%? Death becomes us! I didn't know about this today.
